Steve Lowy, umi’s founder

Caterer & Hotelkeeper Acorn Award-Winner Steve Lowy is a young, successful hotelier and entrepreneur.  In 2008 he was listed in the Courvoisier The Future 500 as the “one to watch in tourism” and umi hotel London was placed in the world’s top 50 budget hotels list by The Telegraph.  These accolades, along with his successful internship program and many other awards, have also earnt him board director positions for BETA (British Educational Travel Association) and WYSETC (World Youth Student & Educational Travel Confederation).

Umi Group is comprised of two UK hotels, a partnership hotel in Moscow, online accommodation booking software product BookItWith and umi Marketing; an agency specialising in travel and hospitality marketing.  Lowy and the umi brand has received extensive press coverage over the years and in titles that include the Financial Times, Caterer & Hotelkeeper, Personnel Today, Big Hospitality, Telegraph, Sunday Express, The Irish Times and CNN.

An alumnus of Salford Business School, Lowy has over ten years experience in the hospitality industry.  He conceived the idea for umi hotels during his travels across Australia, New Zealand, the USA and South East Asia, although he has also travelled across Europe and Thailand and spent time living in the South of Spain.

In January 2011, Lowy participated in the first ever ISTC (International Student Travel Confederation) and STAY WYSE (Association of Youth Travel Accommodation) Skills Exchange Initiative.  Lowy travelled to Cambodia and spent ten days working with Rosy Guesthouse in Siem Reap, mentoring them across areas that included branding, web presence, budgeting and hr.  Every minute of design, consultation and marketing provided by Lowy and the umi Marketing team was donated to the project.

Lowy is able to share his business experience and insight into the hospitality and travel industry with students, fellow professionals, media, industry bodies and investors alike.  He has the ability to inspire, teach and motivate through his personable, confident and professional presentation skills.
