Tax refunds for foreign students working in the UK

Studying in the UK can be a very exciting and rewarding time for an international student. However, the UK tax system can be tricky to navigate so it’s best to keep informed about your obligations and entitlements.

Many foreign students in the UK work part-time to make some much-needed cash. Even if it’s just a temporary or casual job, they may be paying tax and national insurance through the UK PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system.

The PAYE system is designed to deduct the tax you owe from your wages so you won’t be hit with a big tax bill at the end of the year. However, the system taxes you on the assumption that you’re working for the full tax year on the same pay. This means that you may have overpaid tax and could therefore be eligible to claim a tax refund.

Taxback.com has provided tax refunds for many international students in the UK who were taxed more than they should’ve been. We can check your circumstances and provide a free UK tax refund estimation through our tax calculator. If you’re due a tax rebate, we can apply for this on your behalf by filing a UK tax return.
